Animals of the New River Gorge

The New River Gorge is a part of the National Park System and is home to a huge variety of different animals that call it home. When you are rafting, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, ATVing or any other activity in the Gorge, you will definitely see a few of the residents of the New River – ranging from birds to fish to mammals and everything in between.

Keep reading for a list of some of the animals you are likely to encounter on your white water rafting adventure weekend!

MAMMALS

There are over 65 different varieties of Mammal that reside in New River National Gorge, according to the National Park Service.

This number includes:

  • Bats
  • Bears
  • Otters
  • Foxes (Red and Gray)
  • Opposums
  • Woodrats
  • Raccoons

But mammals aren’t the only types of animals that rely on the New River Gorge.. There are also a huge number of birds!

BIRDS

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS

The New River Gorge is also home to a number of different scaly and semi-aquatic creatures. These include snakes, turtles, salamanders, frogs and much more! There are over 90 different types of reptiles and amphibians that live throughout the area. Careful, some of these interesting animals may bite or be poisonous. There are lots of animals you are likely to see on your outdoor vacation. However, do remember that you are in their home, and to practice good land etiquette and leave their environments as you found them.
