No, but all kidding aside, the New River Gorge is within easy traveling distance of many locations throughout the eastern United States. This means that no matter where you are, you can get a taste of all the excitement that the New River Gorge has to offer.
Driving is one of the most beautiful ways to get here, and you’ll have a chance to see all the scenery of Appalachia. From many different directions you can travel by car, and lots of major cities are within an afternoon of driving distance. The best part about taking the car? You get to drive over the infamous New River Gorge bridge.
If your journey begins in Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Washington DC, Baltimore or Philadelphia, why not leave the details to someone else and take the train? No, not the historical train, but instead, Amtrak. Their Cardinal Route covers most of the Mid-Atlantic and as far north as Chicago. This means you get to literally sit back and relax while the world passes by. Oh, and did we mention that there are no pesky stops for bathrooms or to fill up the car?
If you’re coming from a little bit further away and will need to fly in, that works too! The closest major airport is in Charleston, WV, a comfortable hour long drive away from what will be the best whitewater you’ve flown into. If you want to land even closer, and don’t mind small planes or limited schedules, nearby Beckley has a small regional airport. You’ll have to change planes to get into it though, often in Charlotte, NC or Roanoke, VA.
They say that the destination is the journey, and while we agree with that partially, we have to say that the process of traveling to WV is just the beginning of the adventure. If you want to make it great – what better way to make your adventure just last that little bit longer?
