The New River is full of natural and cultural history with a multitude of scenic and recreational activities including white water rafting, fishing, kayak, and scenic float trips, to name a few. The river splits into two distinct sections; the Upper and Lower New River. The Upper New River is suitable for the first time rafter and the Lower New River (commonly known as “The Grand Canyon of the East”) is perfect for the veteran rafter. Both routes offer an incredible experience of nature, but the pace of the Upper New River is great for families with children aged 6 and up, and is full of chances to take pictures and relax. The water temperature is in the 70’s in August, so either route is a refreshing way to beat the heat.

White water rafting consists of navigating a stretch of river on an inflatable rafter. Trips usually go for about 5-7 hours, including lunch. Neither swimming nor experience are necessary, although the former is helpful. Each guest is provided with all necessary safety equipment: a Coast Guard approved Type V Life Jacket, Paddle, and Helmet.
