It’s time to take a look at the fun winter activities that you could participate in this year in the New River Gorge. While they don’t really have so much to do with rafting, every person in the community is somehow related to the whitewater, so it’s easy to understand the importance of local events and businesses and how they can positively impact the whitewater rafting industry. Without further ado, keep reading for some of our favorite winter events in the New River Gorge for 2016.
While any outdoor activity in the parks is considered to be a good one to us, what if you’re looking for something a little more specific to do with friends and family?
Here are a few of our suggestions:
Hidden History Photo Contest Winter Exhibit – West Virginia provides an incredible environment for taking photos that perfectly captures the beauty and heritage of the region. Throughout December, you can see these photos on display at a number of different locations throughout the community. And who knows, maybe they’ll even inspire you to get out there and take some of your own pictures too!
Breakfast with Santa at Tamarack – As the name may suggest, this is a great opportunity to take the little ones to tell Santa what they’re hoping for this Christmas. Add in a delicious breakfast, and it might be the parents that are looking forward to this day next year 😉
Coal Town Christmas – Throughout December, you can visit the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and enjoy beautiful seasonal decorations, horse drawn carriage rides, and of course, take tours of the mine. There will be former employees from the mines busier days who will take you back to the days when coal mining was the essential industry of the region.
Your Own Winter Getaway: So it may not be an “event” per se, but what better way to pass a chilly winter weekend than in the warmth of a cozy luxury cabin with a fire and some hot chocolate? If you’re really lucky, hopefully it will even be snowing at the same time – which really does add an entirely different element of beauty to the gorge.
Pick Your Own Christmas Tree: If you haven’t already done so, the time has arrived to pick out your Christmas tree so that you can hurry up and get decorating! This site has a comprehensive list of some of the best places to get a live Christmas tree in southern West Virginia.
