If you’re planning a thrilling rafting trip on the Gauley River or New River Gorge with River Expeditions, knowing what to wear is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced paddler, the right gear can make all the difference. River Expeditions provides all necessary equipment, such as a paddle, helmet and Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and the Outfitters Store offers a variety of logo rafting gear including sun shirts, hats, jackets, etc.
Essential Gear for All Rafters
Before diving into specific gear recommendations, there are a few basics that everyone should have regardless of skill level:
Swimsuit or Quick-Dry Clothing: A swimsuit or quick-dry clothing is essential. You’ll be getting wet, and materials that dry quickly will keep you comfortable throughout the trip.
Footwear: Proper footwear is a must. Water shoes or sandals with a secure strap are ideal. Avoid flip-flops as they can easily get lost in the current.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses with a retainer strap are important to protect you from the sun’s rays. Even on cloudy days, the reflection off the water can cause sunburn.
Personal Flotation Device (PFD): While River Expeditions provides PFDs for all participants, it’s good to know that you’ll be wearing one at all times. Ensure it fits snugly for maximum safety. Sorry, but you cannot bring/wear your own PFD from home – thanks for understanding.
Wetsuit / Paddling Jacket: For chilly Fall and Spring days on the river, River Expeditions offers convenient, affordable wetsuit and paddling jacket rentals for your added comfort.
Dressing for Different Rafting Levels
When planning your outfit, consider the level of rafting you’re embarking on.
Beginner Rafting
If you’re new to rafting and sticking to calmer waters, such as trips on the Upper New River, you might not need much specialized gear. A swimsuit or shorts and a lightweight shirt should suffice. Be sure to bring a waterproof jacket or windbreaker in case of cool or rainy weather. Or rent a paddling (or splash) jacket from River Expeditions for the day.
Intermediate Rafting
Intermediate rafters, who might take on some of the more challenging sections of the Lower New River Gorge, should consider layering. A wetsuit or a paddling jacket may be necessary, especially during cooler months or on days when the temperature is chilly. Layers like a thermal top or fleece can be easily added or removed depending on the weather.
Advanced Rafting
For advanced rafters tackling the intense rapids of the Gauley River, preparation is key. In addition to a wetsuit and paddling jacket (which we provide as daily rentals), layering is important. River Expeditions sells moisture-wicking polypropylene tops, bottoms, socks and hats for added warmth and comfort, as well as neoprene gloves and booties that can provide extra grip.
Seasonal Considerations
The time of year plays a significant role in what you’ll need to wear. In the summer, lighter gear is often sufficient, but in the spring or fall, when water levels are higher and temperatures lower, layering is essential. Don’t forget to bring extra dry clothes to change into after your adventure.
