Arts in the Area

The New River Gorge is full of thrill inducing  activities such as white water rafting, ATV tours, mountain climbing, and zip lines. These attractions are what draw many people to the area; but most learn upon their arrival that there is much, much more to the region than water sports and almost limitless spans of nature. Southern West Virginia is also home to rich cultural and arts scene that helps to balance the high energy atmosphere that comes with adventure vacations. So, when you are taking a quick break to rest your rafting muscles, be sure to check out local arts and entertainment.

 

One such location that helps to display some of the art of West Virginia is Tamarack (as seen in the picture  above). Tamarack is host to a large gallery, award-winning food, and live theater and entertainment. It also is full of fun, artsy purchases to bring home with you! Tamarack is also a fantastic way to help further support local artisans; as many of the items found within Tamarack are designed by WV natives.

The history Fayette Theatre is host to local actors year round. Some of the plays that will be formed in the remainder of 2014 include The 39 Steps and You Better Watch Out. The theatre is also a stop on West Virginia’s Historic Theatre Tour, where on select dates guests can tour the theatre. It also raises money for local students to use to help pay for college.

If you happen to be planning your trip for the end of July, you might just happen to be in town during the Appalachian String Band Music Festival! This annual event features artists from throughout the  world (over 20 countries are represented!) who specialize in maintaining and spreading traditional Appalachian style string band music. The dates for the festival are from July 30 – August 4, 2014.
