New and Gauley River – Fall Activities / Events

Summer is officially over, which means now is the time to plan a fall adventure! There is something truly magical about fall in Appalachia, and for thrill-seeking rafters, the Gauley River offers an exciting challenge on the water as the Summersville Lake is released and the river reaches peak rafting flows. There are still three weekends left of scheduled release dates for the year, culminating in the much anticipated 2017 Bridge Day festivities on October 21st that attracts extreme sports’ fans from around the world to the New River Gorge; a perfect time to experience both rivers at their best.

Along with the actual BASE jumping event on Bridge Day, the Bridge Jam music festival, Taste of Bridge Day, Bridge Day 5k, and Bridge Day Chili Cook-Off on the weekend of October 20-21st are all huge events that attract over 50,000 people to the area.

In addition to the best rafting of the year, cooler weather and scenic vistas make autumn the ideal time to enjoy other outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, zip-lining and canopy tours. River Expeditions offers all these activities and more, while local events such as Oktoberfest, Fayetteville Farmers Market, and concerts offer visitors plenty of options to make the most of their stay.
